Little River History

Settlers to our area first learned that Indian tribes used the word “mineola” for the stream near their encampment. “Mineola” means “little river,” which became the town’s name, plus the name of Little River’s main street leading to the fishing docks, Mineola Avenue. Little River, one of the oldest settlements along the east coast, dates to the late 1600’s, and it all started with small cabins built by brave settlers on a wide tidal inlet.
