The South Carolina Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross has issued a request for blood donors said because of bad weather across the country, needs from the holiday season, and other demands on the blood supply. Resources have been decreased, especially for Type O negative and Type B negative blood supplies. Since type O negative blood can be used for any patient in urgent situations, having enough of that type is crucial.

At low tide, look for an unusual pinkish-colored barnacle called Megabalanus coccopoma. Let’s call it “Mega” for short because it is huge. Unlike its east coast cousins, “Mega” measures several inches in diameter and originates from the Pacific coast of Central and South America. If sighted, note where you found it, take a photo if possible, and contact the SC Department of Natural Resources at KnottD@dnr.sc.gov.

Our sun holds a life span of another several billion years, but this sun, called Chi Cygni (about 550 light-years away from us) is winding down. We know this because every 408 days it blows up in size, then contracts, like a giant beating heart as it runs out of hydrogen fuel burning in its core. The stages of contracting and expanding make it appear to brighten and dim in the sky.

Explore some of the lesser known areas and sights of the Grand Strand in a Brookgreen Garden program from January 3 to March 4 on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Travel on the Trekker down back roads, exploring cemeteries and other points of interest in the “Silent Cities” program at Brookgreen. Former slaves and plantation owners’ graveyards, historical burial customs of European and African origin, and other interesting features are part of this two-hour excursion.
